MotoGP™: Record-breaker Bezzecchi Claims COTA Crown with Sunday Stunner
AUSTIN, TEXAS – Marco Bezzecchi delivered a breathtaking performance at the Red Bull Texas Grand Prix, securing his fifth consecutive MotoGP™ victory in a race brimming with drama, record-breaking laps, and stunning overtakes. The Italian rider, aboard his Aprilia Racing machine, etched his name into the history books, becoming the third Italian to achieve this remarkable feat, and shattering the existing lap record in the process.
Race Highlights and Key Moments
The race began with Pedro Acosta launching off the front row to grab the holeshot, followed closely by Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin. Early tension mounted as Acosta, attempting to establish a significant lead, pushed deep into Turn 11, triggering a multi-bike collision with Bezzecchi on the tighter line. The incident resulted in a significant fairing exchange, with Bezzecchi retaining the lead, while Acosta recovered quickly, and Martin slotted into third.
“It was a messy start, but I managed to stay calm and focus on the track. The Aprilia was fantastic, and I was able to push to the limit,” Bezzecchi stated after the race.
The race quickly evolved into a tactical battle, with riders battling for position amongst the leading pack. Marc Marquez, following a Long Lap penalty for an incident with Fabio Di Giannantonio, struggled to make headway, eventually dropping to ninth. Joan Mir and Francesco Bagnaia were also involved in a heated battle for fourth, with Bagnaia ultimately overtaking Mir.
Bezzecchi, meanwhile, was relentlessly setting lap records, pushing the Aprilia to its absolute limits. By lap four, he had already surpassed the previous record of 103 consecutive laps led by Jorge Lorenzo in 2015, bringing his total to 104.
"The bike was incredible, and I felt like I could push every single lap. It's a special feeling to break records and win races," Bezzecchi added.
The race saw several notable incidents, including a crash involving Acosta and multiple riders at Turn 11, necessitating a red flag restart. Following the restart, Marquez and Bagnaia engaged in a fierce battle for fifth, with Marquez ultimately gaining the upper hand.
Martin, battling for the lead, suffered a dramatic moment at Turn 1, narrowly avoiding a crash, and was subsequently overtaken by Bagnaia. By the end of the race, Martin secured a well-deserved second place, completing an Aprilia 1-2, the first time the factory has achieved that feat in succession.
