Toprak Returns to Turkey for Medical Checks: "I Hope Surgery Isn't Necessary"

4 min read · 6 views

MotoGP Pramac Yamaha rider Toprak Razgatlıoğlu worried all his fans after his shoulder injury flared up following a hard crash on Saturday. The rider secured 19th place in qualifying and finished the sprint race in the same position. However, he had to abandon the race early due to pain and loss of power in the main race on Sunday. Toprak explained the situation with the following statements:

My biggest problem on Sunday was not the motorcycle, but my shoulder.

When explaining the situation, Toprak stated that the situation on Sunday was different from Saturday's:

It was already in a very bad state in the morning. Saturday was not that bad, it was a short race, but when I woke up Sunday morning, I had real pain and my mobility was reduced.

Difficulties Experienced During the Race

Toprak Razgatlıoğlu stated that the pain he experienced was not a major issue; the real problem was the complete loss of power after his shoulder injury. He pointed out that he did not feel power, especially in braking:

I felt a sharp pain, actually, the pain is not a big problem. The biggest problem was the complete loss of power after my shoulder injury. I couldn't feel power, especially in braking.

He also shared the difficulties in the corners:

I fell further back on every lap because I couldn't get traction on the right corner. I spoke with the team before the race, and they told me, 'If you feel bad, go to the garage or don't race.' I asked, 'Why are we here?'

Toprak also explained his approach to riding:

If riding is possible, I try to do the best I can with my hand. I took my chance. I am not a stupid rider; if I felt really bad, I would go to the garage, that would be the easy way. I am happy that I tried. It was very hard, and it got worse on every lap. The direction changes in turns 7-8 and 13-14 were incredibly challenging. Normally, no rider rides a motorcycle when their shoulder is out. As I said, I just took my chance.

He also relayed the changes in sensation experienced during the long race:

I was not bad in the qualifying on Saturday; I competed in the sprint. However, in the long race, the sensation in my shoulder changed a lot because when I moved my shoulder slightly, I felt as if it had flared up again. It was a very strange situation. Normally, I get better each day, but after the accident, everything changed because I couldn't just think about the motorcycle; I also had to manage my shoulder, and the weekend became a disaster. We had started very well, but it ended up being the worst of the day.

Looking Ahead

Toprak Razgatlıoğlu explained his next steps given the situation:

Now we have a week. I am returning to Turkey on Monday. I will get an MRI to check my shoulder. I hope I won't need surgery. I hope resting will be enough for the next race. I think I will be stronger for the next weekend than for this one, but we will see. For now, I just need to rest. I am very sad for this weekend because we hadn't started well on Monday.
