KTM Executive Neumeister Skeptical

3 min read · 3 views

The standards for engines used in Moto2 and Moto3 races have become a topic of debate. Since 2010, Honda has been used in these races, while since 2019, Triumph engines have been employed. For Moto3, it is stated that starting from 2028, Yamaha will offer a model based on the R7 series engine as its main chassis.

The Cost of Single-Engine Vehicle Regulations

Promotor Liberty and the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) continue discussions with the five manufacturers—Aprilia, Ducati, Honda, KTM, and Yamaha—regarding how to reduce costs in MotoGP races. Suggestions were put forward, such as introducing a cover system to reduce the total budget.

KTM Managing Director Gottfried Neumeister was skeptical of these types of cost-saving methods. Neumeister pointed to the Formula 1 example, stating, "I do not think a cost cover will always be provided." However, he noted that a foundation is established for all teams to participate in the race and that smaller teams are now included in the forefront. Neumeister took a distant stance against such regulations.

"I do not like the single-engine vehicle regulation; I am against it. Yes, this saves money, but this goes against my understanding of the sport. I believe in the limits being pushed by racers and the necessity to switch to a second vehicle when required. This is the heart of MotoGP for me. A cost cover might be good because everyone can race under the same conditions. But we must do this smartly and find the best solutions for the sport."

The Advantage for Smaller Teams

Neumeister emphasized the potential for smaller teams to reduce costs. Osterreicher stated that if all riders use the same fuel, this will not affect the spectators' enjoyment. Furthermore, if fuel supply is available, everyone operates on the same basis, and competition arises regarding who consumes more fuel. Therefore, he stressed that elements causing cost and headaches for smaller teams should not be optimized when there is no impact on the spectators.

Conclusion

Methods for reducing costs in MotoGP races are being debated. Regarding single-engine vehicle regulations, KTM manager Neumeister opposed these types of regulations while stating that the best solutions must be found in accordance with the requirements of the sport. This sets the stage for the next race and the expected decisions.
