Pavesio: We must not lose the bone spectators during the transition process

3 min read · 0 views

Liberty Media began a radical transformation process to expand its viewership by acquiring MotoGP for 4.2 billion euros in 2024. This transformation included expanding the race calendar, introducing new fan events, reducing the visibility of the Moto2 and Moto3 classes while highlighting the premier class, and strategic changes to the 2027 weekend format.

Differences Between MotoGP and Formula 1

Motorsport commentator Paolo Pavesio acknowledges that growth will benefit the sport while highlighting the fundamental differences between Formula 1 and MotoGP. Pavesio emphasized that Formula 1 offers a lifestyle from brands, whereas MotoGP's main objective is the sale of motorcycles by manufacturers. These financial aspects were expressed as follows:

If we take a total investment in this area as 100 units, 70 of it is covered by the five manufacturers in MotoGP.

Why are we doing this? To sell motorcycles. Therefore, we must be very careful.

While stating that the growth of the sport will be beneficial, Pavesio stressed the need to avoid a situation where existing fans feel detached from the sport and drift away. He also expressed his belief that MotoGP aims to increase on-track enjoyment with the new technical regulations entering into force in 2027 and that new generation motorcycles will have a positive effect:

I do not think the technical regulations for next year will be a mistake.

The Impact of New Technologies

Fabio Quartararo stated his belief that the new technical regulations aim to increase on-track enjoyment, and that new generation motorcycles will have a positive effect. In this context, he said that motorcycles will remain at the limits but will be brought to a slightly more human level, and this will definitely benefit the spectacle on track. Furthermore, he stressed that the growth of the sport is a great opportunity to attract new people, but if Formula 1 gains new viewers, it will not directly affect the sales of Ferrari, McLaren, or Alpine:

If the sport grows and attracts new people, it is a great opportunity. However, if you bring new viewers to F1, you do not directly affect the sales of Ferrari, McLaren, or Alpine.

Additionally, a differing view emerged regarding the situation:

The situation is different for us. We also produce scooters used in urban transport.

Conclusion

Pavesio emphasized the importance of not losing core viewers during the transformation process. He stated that since this is a commercial investment, what matters is that the sport grows, but it must consider the risk of existing fans drifting away.
