MotoGP is implementing significant changes to the weekend format starting with the 2027 season. With the new format officially announced, separate qualifying sessions will be organized for the Sprint race and the Sunday Grand Prix. Additionally, the Friday pre-qualifying session and the Sunday morning Warm Up will be eliminated.
Friday Qualifying for Sprint
In the new format, FP1 will be conducted for 45 minutes on Friday. This will be followed by a 30-minute FP2, which will take the place of the current Practice session. A 15-minute Sprint qualifying session, open to all riders, will be held at the end of the day. This session will determine the starting grid for the Sprint race to be held on Saturday. Thus, the two races determined by a single qualifying session up to this point will be completely separated from 2027 onwards.
Pre-Qualifying and Q1 Changes
The duration of the FP3 session will be reduced from 30 minutes to 20 minutes. Following this, the qualifying sessions for the main race will commence. In the new system, all MotoGP riders will be on track for Q1, and after the 15-minute session, the fastest 12 riders will earn the right to advance to Q2. These 12 riders will compete for pole position and the top four grid spots in Q2. Consequently, the Friday pre-qualifying application will end.
Sunday Morning Warm Up Eliminated
Another significant change in the 2027 format will be the elimination of the MotoGP Warm Up session. Similar to the system previously applied in Moto2 and Moto3 categories, a Sunday morning Warm Up will not be held in MotoGP. Instead, the pit lane will be kept open for 10 minutes before the race. Riders will be able to make several exploratory laps during this time to check their motorcycles and settings. With the new format, the total time riders spend on track throughout the weekend will be significantly reduced. Riders will ride for 30 minutes on Friday and 10 minutes on Saturday, and with the elimination of the Warm Up, a total of 50 minutes on track will be eliminated.
2027 MotoGP Weekend Schedule
The weekend schedule for the new format will be organized as follows:
- FP1 duration: 45 minutes.
- FP2 duration: 30 minutes.
- Sprint Qualifying: 15 minutes.
- FP3 duration: 20 minutes.
- Q1 duration: 15 minutes.
- Q2 duration: 15 minutes.
- The Sprint race will be held on Saturday.
- There will be no Warm Up on Sunday.
The structure of MotoGP races will change significantly as the 2027 season will transition to 850cc engines and Pirelli tires, returning to a weekend format.
