Toprak Razgatlıoğlu showed promising performance during the morning session of the Misano Grand Prix, but due to issues experienced during the afternoon Pre-Qualifying session, he failed to achieve the expected progress. He expressed disappointment at the end of the day, noting that the national athlete experienced serious difficulties with braking and corner entry with the soft rear tire.

Toprak Razgatlıoğlu delivered one of the best FP1 performances of the season during the morning session of the Misano Grand Prix on Friday. With 15 laps on the medium tire, he set a lap time that moved Toprak to 14th place, while the Pramac Yamaha rider was expected to make a much bigger improvement in the afternoon Pre-Qualifying session on the soft tire.

However, the situation for Toprak completely changed after the first use of the soft tire.

“Everything was perfect this morning. I felt very good on the medium tire and I only needed to improve a few corners. When I looked at the laps at the end of the session, I thought we would make a big step with the soft tire.”

The Character of Soft Tires

Toprak's main problem at Misano was that the motorcycle did not slow down enough during braking. Therefore, our national athlete, who struggles to hold the line during corner entries, stated that the extra grip provided by the soft tire in the rear pushed the front side and made it difficult for the motorcycle to turn.

Toprak also linked the problem he experienced on the Superbike motorcycle to the riding style.

“I have to ride like in a Superbike because the soft tire pushes the rear side against the front, and the motorcycle doesn't stop.”

Our national athlete also stated that the soft rear tire used in MotoGP has a different character that needs to be adapted to.

“Also, I am not used to this soft rear tire because I am used to using the SCX.”

Uncertainty of the Solution

The team stated that although they analyzed the motorcycle's braking problem, they have not yet found a clear solution. While high grip levels on the Misano track should normally be positive, they believe that with the current setup, it makes it even harder to stop the motorcycle.

“The main problem is that the motorcycle doesn't stop. I cannot adjust the corner, I lose the line, and the situation doesn't change on exit. I cannot make a good time. We are discussing this with the team, but we do not know the reason for this problem.”

Furthermore, the team expressed that they believe that the lack of excessive grip, although normally a good thing, makes it harder to stop the motorcycle.

“I think that having too much grip makes it harder to stop the motorcycle, even though it is normally a good thing.”

Necessity of Setup Changes

Toprak stated that because the grip character on the track is different, the setup that yielded good results in Aragon did not produce the expected result at Misano. Our national athlete examined Fabio Quartararo's data but noted that even with earlier braking, the motorcycle still did not stop sufficiently.

“We started with the setup we used in Aragon where we got good results. We used the same setup in the afternoon. However, the grip changes on this track, and I think this is what makes the difference.”

Toprak, who said that his morale was lowered by the problems he experienced at the end of the day, stated that he needs to reset his mind before focusing on Saturday.

“I don't know right now. I am just trying to relax because my brain is already stopped at this moment. I was not expecting something like this.”

Although he failed to deliver the performance he expected after the first day at Misano, he expressed that they would try to achieve a strong result with a different setup on Saturday.

“We will see tomorrow. We will try to make some changes because as far as I understand, we need a different setup with the soft tire.”
