Estoril 2006: Valentino Rossi Brought Two Riders to the Podium

2 min read · 5 views

MotoGP races were an event where Valentino Rossi secured his victory at Estoril on October 15, 2006. This race is considered one of the best races in MotoGP history. Two riders contested for the lead in the race, and it was not easy for many to guess who those riders were: Spanish rider Toni Elias and Kenny Roberts Jr.

The Battle of Two Outsiders

A crash in the fifth lap turned the race into chaos with the fall of Repsol-Honda riders Nicky Hayden and Dani Pedrosa. Initially, Valentino Rossi took the lead ahead of Colin Edwards on the Yamaha bikes. A lead group then formed behind him. As Elias advanced from the starting position number 11, Roberts Jr. passed from position number 13. This situation turned into a four-rider contest instead of the expected Rossi lead. It was rare but possible for two outsiders to contend for the championship this year. Honda bikes were widely distributed; customer teams like Fortuna Gresini also received equipment of nearly equal value. Roberts Jr., however, had a bike with a Honda engine and his own chassis. This is the last prototype team to lead and win a MotoGP race. The balance has changed in recent years; in the 800cc era, satellite bikes became replicas of previous years' machines, and true outsider victories were lost; however, Jack Miller won a victory at Assen in 2016. Today, bikes are distributed differently; independent teams have the latest equipment. Jorge Martin became the first Privatfahrer MotoGP World Champion on the Pramac-Ducati in 2024. The Estoril finale was an event where the race was at its highest level. The lead changed more than once in the final lap; Rossi took the lead once more on the last corner; but Elias was caught in the wind and passed the Doctor at the finish line. Two-wheeled racing is considered the closest photograph of the MotoGP era today. Roberts Jr. finished third, which was his 22nd and final GP podium in his career. For Elias, this was his only championship win; for Rossi, it was the cost of second place, which was five points short of the championship at the end of the season. In the 2006 season, Nicky Hayden was celebrated as the last MotoGP World Champion from the USA at Valencia.
