Pilots Will Implement Sprint Qualifying in the New MotoGP Format

2 min read · 2 views

MotoGP is transitioning to a new structure to avoid repetition for riders and teams. Within these new regulations, 15-minute "Sprint Qualifying" sessions are included on Friday. In the old system, the single qualifying session held on Saturday determined the starting grid for both the Sprint and the main Sunday race. With the new format, the Friday qualifying will only determine the grid for the Sprint race; the starting grid for the Sunday race will be determined by the traditional Q1 and Q2 sessions held on Sunday morning.

Details of the New Weekend Format

With the new regulations, the practice session where riders competed for a place in Q2 on Friday has been removed. Additionally, the warm-up session held Sunday morning has been removed from the schedule, allowing more time for rider promotional events where riders meet fans.

The 2027 MotoGP weekend format will be structured as follows:

  • Sprint Qualifying (SQ): 15 Minutes for the Saturday race setup
  • Free Practice: 45 Minutes
  • Free Practice: 30 Minutes
  • Free Practice: 20 Minutes
  • Qualifying Session (Q1, 15 Min + Q2, 15 Min): Q2 session where all riders participate and the first 12 will race (for the setup of the main Sunday race)
  • Sprint Race
  • Grand Prix
