The Aragon Grand Prix revealed issues with the Yamaha V4 motorcycle regarding both cornering performance and straight-line riding. This highlighted how the dependency between engine power and tire management affects race results.

The Dual Problem of the Yamaha V4’s Performance

The problems of the Yamaha V4 in the race cannot be explained by a single component. Although the motorcycle’s chassis balance and steering potential were not completely lost, it was observed that riders lacked defense on straights while being fast in corners.

Jack Miller stated that while he was satisfied with the cornering performance, there was an approximate 10 km/h deficit compared to the KTM motorcycles on the straights. This situation causes riders to lose time gained in corners and lack defense against overtakes.

Tire Management Challenged Toprak

[Toprak Razgatlıoğlu] recorded the best personal result in the Yamaha during the fastest 10 laps of the race. However, the fundamental problem for the national athlete was not just generating speed, but maintaining that performance until the end of the race. Toprak reported that the front tire dropping caused locking during braking, making it difficult to stop and keep the motorcycle on track.

The aggressive braking technique developed by Toprak with Pirelli tires in WorldSBK was one of his greatest assets. It was emphasized that if the Michelin front tire lost performance, the same approach could create greater risks.

The Relationship Between Engine and Tire

It can be misleading to treat engine power and tire management as two completely independent problems. The speed loss on the straights forces Yamaha riders to gain time during braking and corner entry. More aggressive braking can increase the load on the front tire. If the motorcycle loses ground on the straights, the rider attempting to make up the deficit elsewhere can accelerate the loss of tire performance in the final part of the race.

Yamaha Needs Holistic Solutions

Yamaha cannot simply provide a more powerful engine or a different chassis in the short term. The factory needs to establish a more efficient integration between power delivery, electronics, motorcycle balance, and tire usage. Chassis and electronic updates that Pramac announced for the near future are therefore important. However, the components and the race to be used have not yet been disclosed. The Aragon data showed that the V4 has potential to compete. What is missing is the ability to distribute this potential across the entire race distance without losing it on the straights or consuming the tires.
